My daughter, Gracianna Rider, is my hero. She was diagnosed with RETT syndrome in 2003 when she was 3 years old.RETT syndrome is a neurological disorder seen primarily in females. It is usually caused by a mutation of the MECP2 gene on the X chromosome.Girls with RETT appear to develop normally until the ages of 6-18 months of age, when there is a delay in development, particularly affecting speach, hand skills,and coordination. Intellectual development is also severely delayed. A hallmark of RETT is repetitive hand movements that are almost constant when awake. Other features include seizures, irregular breathing, and curvature of the spine.Gracianna has since regressed to the point of needing full assistance and care in every aspect of her life.Our family does not do the normal family things, such as trips to visit relatives,fun days at the park or movies because of the transport issues we have with her. She has gotten to the point that she is too heavy to lift in and out of the vehicle. At this time when we take her anywhere, which is generally just to doctors visits, we have to put her into the vehicle and then try to get her wheelchair inside also. We do have a minivan now but no way to leave her in her chair while traveling and no way to fasten her chair so it does not move around. This opportunity would greatly help in easing the complication of traveling and allow Gracianna to take part in more activities with her younger siblings.
