I am lumping the two books together in one review because when I started the first book Northern Lights I had to continue on and read the sequel Journey: A Northern Lights Adventure. They are very quick and enjoyable reads.
These books are meant for the Middle School and High School reading group but was a fun quick read for me as an Adult. They are about a pop star singing group called Lightstar who are just finishing up the last concert on their tour before Christmas break, when they are transported back in time to 1862. The group finds themselves amidst the Civil War. With in their group 2 out of the 5 members were actually from the south and still had remnants of a southern accent which lands them in a heap of trouble right from the beginning. When the group is stumbled upon by the Union Army they quickly single out the 2 group members because of their accent and quickly condemn them to a trip to the jail for the Confederate POWs. Through this book the group is divided. Half trying to find the 2 other members while not trying to be condemned themselves for being different. The first book is a non stop adventure with another dangerous situation around the corner. Through the book part of the group meets President Lincoln and he in turn offers them a singing gig to help cheer up the soliders. He is also a key person to help them get their friends back. By the end of the first book the group is together in the same area but not close enough together when the Northern Lights (which they believe is their way home) comes back around.
In the second book Journey: A Northern Lights Adventure you start off with the Groups first missed chance to get back to their own time. Now they have to figure out how they are going to get home and what to do in the mean time. They head back to DC in thought to take the Singing gig with the president but these boys have some awful luck. Again they are divided and have to find a way back together. Again you are introduced to some great Civil war characters and are speeding through the whirlwind of trouble they find themselves in. The book is great but definitely not the end of the adventures of LightStar in Civil War America. I can't wait to read the next in series and I hope there will be one because would love to know how the group is doing and if they ever make it home.
These books are by Stephanie Wincik here is her site.
